How to check if your phone is carrier unlocked
You can quickly check whether your phone is carrier unlocked directly from your device settings. This is especially important if you’re planning to use an eSIM while traveling or switch to another mobile provider.
An unlocked phone can connect to different mobile networks, while a carrier-locked device remains restricted to its original provider, even if it supports eSIM. Below, we’ll show you how to check your carrier lock status on both iPhone and Android and confirm whether your device is ready to use with another provider.
How to check if your iPhone is unlocked
On an iPhone, you can quickly check whether your device is unlocked and able to use another carrier or travel eSIM.
- Go to Settings → General → About, then scroll down to Carrier Lock or Network Provider Lock.
No SIM restrictions means your iPhone is unlocked and can be used with other carriers and compatible eSIMs.
SIM locked means your iPhone is restricted to your current carrier and won’t work with another carrier or travel eSIM until it has been unlocked.
How to check if your Android phone is unlocked
On Android devices, you can check whether your phone is unlocked by viewing the available mobile network operators. The exact menu names may vary slightly depending on your device.
- Go to Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → Network Operators, then turn off Select Automatically to search for available networks.
If multiple network operators appear, your phone can generally connect to other carrier networks.
If only your current carrier appears, or you’re unable to select another network, your device may be carrier locked. You can confirm its lock status directly with your current carrier.
What can I do if my device is network or carrier-locked?
If you purchased your device through a mobile carrier, it may be network or carrier locked. This means your provider has restricted the device from connecting to other mobile networks.
A carrier-locked device generally can’t use an eSIM from another provider. To use a SennaSim eSIM, you’ll need to contact your current carrier and request that your device be unlocked.
Once your device has been successfully unlocked, you should be able to install and use eSIMs from other providers. We recommend installing your SennaSim eSIM before your trip while you have a reliable internet connection, then activating your data plan once you arrive at your destination.
I removed the carrier lock from my device, but I still can’t install or use an eSIM
If your device was recently unlocked but you’re still unable to install or use an eSIM, your carrier may have temporarily restricted eSIM functionality for security reasons. In this case, contact your carrier to confirm that eSIM support has been fully enabled.
If you have any questions, please contact support. We’ll be happy to help.
What does “carrier-locked” or “network-locked” mean?
Carrier-locked or network-locked devices are restricted to using networks and SIMs from one mobile provider, if your device is carrier or network-locked, you can’t use SennaSim.
What should I know before checking if my device is carrier unlocked?
- eSIM compatibility doesn’t necessarily mean your device is carrier unlocked. A phone can support eSIM technology while still being restricted to a specific carrier.
- Devices purchased through contracts, payment plans, or corporate programs may remain carrier locked until they meet the provider’s requirements for unlocking.
- We recommend checking your carrier lock status before traveling or purchasing an eSIM to avoid any issues getting connected.
- If you’re unsure, your carrier can confirm your device’s lock status using its IMEI number and explain any requirements for unlocking it.
- You can also test your device with a SIM or eSIM from another provider, although checking your device settings is usually quicker.
